Excessive Hair Removal

Excessive Hair Removal Melbourne?

Every woman desires having silky smooth skin with no hair. It can be accomplished by either of the following methods:

  1. Permanent hair removal
  2. Permanent hair reduction

Permanent hair removal irreversibly damages hair follicles and disables regrowth of hair. This can be achieved by electrolysis.

IPL is used to permanently reduce hair growth; however it does not permanently remove hair. Regrowth of hair does occur but it is delayed for long periods of time. Excess hair removal can be permanently achieved only by electrolysis.

IPL (intense Pulsed Light) uses a heightened light source similar to laser technology. But IPL is a broader spectrum of light rather than a single wavelength of light. This creates more flexibility during the procedure.

Electrolysis hair removal:

Electrolysis involves permanent excess hair removal by irreversibly damaging hair follicles and disabling regrowth of hair.

Undesired facial hair is permanently removed from its root near the matrix. The matrix provides the hair with oxygen and flood. The procedure involves gliding a thin hair like probe inside the follicle and an electric current is passed down the probe in to the follicle. This causes destruction of the matrix resulting in hair being released from its attachment to the follicle.

Procedure for excess hair removal

Here at Chelsea Cosmetics the diathermy approach is used. It involves a high frequency wave that is converted into heat, which is highly destructive to the root of the hair, applying a needle in very short blasts of up to 3 seconds.

Electrolysis is mostly painless other than a mild stinging sensation which may be felt.

Care after excess hair removal:

Electrolysis can be a very short procedure; depending on size of the area being treated it can take from as little as 15 minutes to more than an hour. The procedure only takes a couple of seconds but needs to be repeated on larger areas.

After treatment a cool gel or ice is applied over the treated area to cool it and we advise to use a basic moisturiser for a few of days.

Initially it may seem like the hair is growing back, but it is just the dermal layers pushing the hair to the surface. Some patients have the impulse to pull out the hair but they fall out on its own in a week’s time.

As fresh follicles start to grow in place of the damaged ones it is imperative to have a minimum of 3 cycles to see an obvious difference.

However patients should bear in mind that although this is a long term solution, it is not a permanent solution.

Prices for Electrolysis

We at Chelsea Cosmetics are aware that one electrolysis cycle is not enough to have an effective treatment. This is why we recommend having treatments closer together.

IPL Hair Removal

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) and laser hair removal treatment is very highly in demand these days. They are also more popular because traditional techniques for hair removal like electrolysis or waxing are painful and cost more. Excess hair removal can be reduced by Light based treatments, permanently reducing hair on the face and body. This can be achieved in fewer numbers of treatments and also with more ease as opposed to traditional methods.

At Chelsea Cosmetic and Day Surgery we use the most advanced Palomer IPL technology.

Palomar IPL machine is far superior to alternate IPL machines available in the market. Palomar IPL system delivers definitive wavelengths which makes it very safe while treating darker skin and also less risky in causing incidental skin burns. It also has a broader spectrum allowing it to treat larger areas in shorter time. It also has exceptional contact cooling and smooth pulse technology for all types of skin, various hair colours and for fine hair.

Benefits of IPL excess hair removal

Palomar IPL has no discomfort even on sensitive areas like bikini areas.

You will experience longer hair removal intervals along with lasting results between each session meaning you save more compared to alternate IPL machines.

Contraindications

Patients who have hirsutism have more serious underlying endocrine disorder. They should seek treatment if necessary.

We can initiate pre-treatment with antiviral medications for patients who have prolonged or active cold sores, particularly when lesions develop in area of the body that is to be treated. Usually, antiviral treatment starts 1 day earlier to the laser treatment and is carried on up to 5-7 days.

Patients who had thick scars or had developed keloids in the past need to be treated carefully as it can lead to recovery problems if skin damage occurs.

Patients who take isotretinoin (Accutane) need to stop medication 6 months before their laser hair removal procedure due to skin sensitivity.

Patients who take photo-sensitising drugs activated by ultraviolet may have to withhold laser hair removal.

If patients have tattoos in areas that are to be treated for excessive hair removal, they should be advised that the laser devices may alter the how their tattoo appears, as some pigments may become light or dark due to the procedure.

For excess hair removal to be effective through IPL or laser mechanism, hair follicles need to exist. It should also be determined if any other method of hair removal has been followed in the past like recent waxing, plucking, sugaring, electrolysis or any other method.

Expectations

Almost 80% patients experience good response to laser treatment.

Patients need to be made aware that about 30% hair reduction will occur in the affected area after laser treatment.

Expectation should be set for patients that several treatments are generally required to obtain the desired results in hair removal. To accomplish patient satisfaction up to 5 treatments maybe required.

Time span between your IPL treatments is one to three months.

Response to laser hair removal varies for each individual and also depends upon a number of aspects like skin colour, hair colour and size, type of laser, fluence, wavelength and skin construction.

Minimal risk is involved in laser treatment for hair removal. Minor soreness may be experienced. Patients also need to be made aware of possible adverse effects, reactions and complexities involved in laser treatment for excess hair removal.

The ideal patient for laser hair removal is people with light coloured skin and dark hair.

Skin preparation and safety

Active tanning and sunlight should be avoided and so should bleaching the skin with hydroquinone or retinoic acid as this can lighten the skin before to IPL procedure.

Use of shavers or razors or depilatory creams is acceptable up to a day before the treatment, leaving the hair inside the follicles and beneath the surface of the skin.

The skin needs to be completely free of makeup, anesthetic creams and other applicants just before the IPL treatment. Cleansing could be performed with water, followed by alcohol swabs and should be thoroughly dry.

IPL hair removal treatment includes negligible side effects like redness on the treated area which can last from a few hours to a day. You may experience a feeling of being sun burnt in the treated area which usually eases off in a day.

It is normal for slight scabbing to appear for the next few days. It is advised to apply aloe vera to the treated area as this accelerates healing.

The skin needs to recoup, hence we do not recommend any kind of tanning or body treatments up to 1 week.

Laser hair removal technique emanates light at wavelengths which are captured by the pigment in the hair follicle (pigment gives hair its colour). The laser is then pulsed for less than a second keeping it for just enough time to damage the follicle. Intense pulsed light which has been captured by the pigment turns in to heat eventually disrupting the follicle. Regrowth of hair is delayed due to the thermal damage which permanently destroys the hair follicle.
