Areas of the body, such as the face, which are regularly exposed to the sun are at risk of an acquired hypermelanosis called melasma. These hyperpigmented macules are symmetrically distributed and can confluent or punctate. This is most common in areas such as the cheeks, upper lip, chin, and forehead which often receive sun exposure. While these are some familiar locations, melasma can also be found in areas less exposed to the light.

Causes of Melasma

Sunlight, remains the most significant factor in the development of melasma with any treatment that is exposed to the sun rendered near pointless. As a result, melasma is challenging to treat as it develops gradually. It can be extremely resistant or often recur if strict avoidance of the sun is not taken.

There are other factors, like female hormonal activity, pregnancy, and the use of oral contraceptives have all been known to worsen the chances of melasma. It can also be caused by photosensitizing medications, mild ovarian or thyroid dysfunction, and even particular cosmetics which is why this issue is far more common in women.

Melasma Prevention and Treatment

Prophylactic management is regularly found as the most effective prevention along with complete avoidance of sun exposure and the regular use of high-SPF sunscreens (50+), which also can work as prevention.

If you do suffer from Melasma, we off a range of cosmetic surgery treatment depigmenting skin product options at Chelsea Cosmetics Melbourne, including;

  • Hydroquinone, which produces reversible depigmentation of the skin by inhibiting enzymatic oxidation of tyrosine.
  • Azelaic acid, which helps to decrease microcomedo formation. It may have a bleaching effect on skin and can also have an antimicrobial effect.
  • Topical tretinoin (vitamin A) helps to organise the pigmentation which makes it easier to be treated with laser or it can be used in a higher concentration as a gentle peelant.

Fotona Q-Switch Laser Treatment

Pigmented lesions are remarkably common, and the overwhelming majority are benign. Benign pigmented lesions have been significantly decreased by the use of Q-Switched lasers and are the chosen tool for this procedure by many members of the medical community.

Short pulses of concentrated light are produced by Multi-wavelength, Q-Switched lasers that have a frequency-doubled KTP. This light is then selectively absorbed by the pigments we wish to target in a lesion.

UVB Protection

For patients with melasma, complete avoidance of the sun is essential for resolution and as a prevention of any recurrence. Patients can use bleaching creams, but you should be aware that topical bleaching creams can take a long time to take effect as they provide slow but gradual lightening.

Melasma is commonly found in darker types of skin, in particular, light brown skin. This places Latinos and Asians, especially those from parts of the world with intense sun exposure, at high risk. Women are also significantly affected as 90% of cases are found in females.

How it Works

What can be done for MELASMA?

Depigmenting skin products:

Hydroquinone produces reversible depigmentation of skin by inhibiting enzymatic oxidation of tyrosine.

Azelaic acid may decrease microcomedo formation. It may have a bleaching effect on skin. It may also have an antimicrobial effect.

Topical tretinoin (vitamin A) inhibits microcomedo formation and eliminates lesions.

Fotona Qswitch Laser:

Pigmented lesions are remarkably common and the overwhelming majority are benign. It is widely recognized in the medical community that Q-Switched lasers are the ideal tools for effectively removing benign pigmented lesions. Multi-wavelength, Q-Switched laser systems with frequency-doubled KTP are uniquely able to produce very short pulses of intense light that are selectively absorbed by treatment-specific pigments in a lesion.

Most Popular FAQs

To reduce skin pigmentation, Chelsea Cosmetics Melbourne uses Fotona QX MAX laser treatment. Most types of pigmentation is affected by this particular kind of treatment. It is also safe for darker skin types. An intense beam of light is delivered via laser which the skin absorbs via skin pigments (melanin) and is then converted into heat energy. This energy destroys the melanin with the skin structures around the area that we do not wish to be affected left untouched. Laser energy is more effective than creams as it targets deep within the dermis so the lower-layered pigmentation can be effectively treated.

No skin thinning will occur as a result of this treatment. The procedure can cause temporary mild redness or dryness in some cases, and this is often mistaken as thinned skin; however, this is not the case. The laser energy targets excessive skin pigments without stripping or thinning any layers of the skin. Fotona QX MAX laser treatment actually encourages collagen synthesis which can lead to improvements in dermal layer thickness as well as collagen fiber density.

You may experience mild redness for a few hours post-treatment. It is vital that you avoid exposure to the sun for at least a month, both before and after the treatment. It is also strongly recommended that the use of SPF 25 or higher sunscreen be used. Moisturiser can also be used to soothe any dry skin.

This is very dependent on the type and severity of the pigmentation. Patients can range from two to eight treatments before significant pigmentation reduction is seen. The treatment session will take roughly 30 minutes, with no recovery time required.

Fotona laser treatment will also provide skin tightening and overall rejuvenation. The laser energy can, for some patients, stimulate collagen synthesis while also remodeling. This can lead to improvements in skin elasticity, the diminishing of pore size and permanent decrease of fine hairs.
