What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a quick, non-surgical and minimally invasive technique that will enhance the skin’s texture, making it appear radiant and rejuvenated. This is different from dermabrasion – which is a lot more aggressive, and is not commonly done today.
Microdermabrasion essentially involves gentle exfoliating on the surface of the skin, and is safe and effective for any skin type / color. What’s more, this is a painless process with almost zero downtime.
In this process, a rough diamond-tipped applicator with suction is used to buff away dead and damaged skin cells from the face, neck, arms and any other area that is being treated. After this procedure, the skin will look a lot brighter, softer and smoother – giving the impression of skin that’s clear, fresh and young.
The Different Types of Microdermabrasion
- Crystal Microdermabrasion
This is a traditional system of microdermabrasion – which entails application of micro-crystals onto the skin to exfoliate the skin.
- Diamond Microdermabrasion
It’s a modern system which doesn’t rely on the use of crystals. Instead, it uses an exfoliating tip to gently exfoliate 20-25 microns of dead skin cells of the topmost layer (stratum corneum). This tip creates a gentle vacuum on the surface which sucks away dirt and dead cells. Once this is done, the skin feels noticeably fresh and young.
Microdermabrasion: Who is it for?
Almost anyone (men / women with any skin type or color) who has experienced skin that’s dull, aging, flaky, dry, congested, blemished, thickened, blotchy or unevenly textured or sun damaged can opt for this. Even those with an acne scarred skin could look at microdermabrasion as an option for clear, blemish free radiance.
Scope of Treatment: Which areas can be treated?
Microdermabrasion, because of its gentle nature, can be used to treat almost any area of the body.
Having said that, the face and the neck happen to be the most popular areas for this procedure. Other common areas that we often treat are the décolletage, the back of hands, arms and abdomen.
How does microdermabrasion benefit the skin?
Our skin renews itself with a fresh layer of skin, approximately every 28 days.
As these new cells are formed, they push the older, dying cells to the top surface of the skin. These dead skin cells often settle on the skin’s surface, giving a dull, uneven look.
This process of renewal slows down further as we age, and our skin looks aged and tired.
How many treatments does one need?
At Chelsea Cosmetics, we recommend a six session course and follow up treatments. These could be regular monthly treatments, but could also be more frequent, depending on your specific skin requirements.
However, one will observe, smoother, fresher, cleaner skin after the first session itself, and these results become more pronounced after the third session.
How long does the treatment take?
The time taken for this procedure is completely dependent on the area of treatment, as well as the strength of the setting used. If high settings are being used, then we do not recommend longer treatments – as then it would cause skin irritation.
Does microdermabrasion have any side effects?
Microdermabrasion is a safe, minimally invasive procedure.
However, there is the possibility of a slight tingling sensation, followed by the skin feeling taut and warm, like it has been exposed to the wind or sun. Sometimes, the skin could also look a tad flushed, but this generally subsides within 12 – 24 hours.
Precautions to be taken:
- A consultation with our in-house experts in case you are suffering from any of these conditions – Hepatitis C, AIDS, rosacea, dermatitis, skin cancers, eczema, easy bruising or if you are on blood thinners / Accutane.
- In the case of people suffering from cold sores, it is advised to use an anti-viral cream prior to the treatment, so as to contain the spread of these sores over a larger area.
- For those who use Retin A products / any other skin products that might irritate the skin, they should stop using these atleast 2-3 days before and after the treatment.
- For a week prior to and following the procedure, it is advised to stay away from treatments and products like electrolysis, depilatories, waxing, peels, any other glycolic or lactic treatments, and Vitamin A acid skincare products.
What is the greatest advantage of microdermabrasion?
Unlike other skin treatments for similar conditions, microdermabrasion doesn’t involve any post treatment swelling or healing. So it is possible to return to one’s normal routine with absolutely no downtime. This is thus a perfect treatment for people who wish to enhance their skin, without taking days off work!
