Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

Often our eyes look tired and puffy over a period of time. Many people complain of saggy or droopy eyelids. This is common in both men and women and often runs in the family. There are elastic fibers in our skin that keep the skin under the eye firm, however, exposure to the sun without sunglasses directly impacts the fibers, making them weak.

Due to ageing, our eyelid skin starts thinning and stretching; also muscles become weak with time, which makes the fat that provides padding for the eyeball, advance around the eyes. Puffiness occurs when the fat that pads the eyes moves away from the bone of the lower eye and droops. Upper eyelids sag and hood above the eyes making them look heavier.

Eyelift surgery is a common choice made by a lot of people for rectifying these conditions. Cosmetic/Plastic Eye surgery or Blepharoplasty can be performed on saggy or hooded eyes, restoring the silhouette of your eyes and removing the bulging fat bags.  If you need to discuss eyelid surgery in Melbourne then fill out the form or give us a call and we will be glad to answer all your questions.

Eye Lift Surgery Methods

During the eyelid lift surgery, surplus fat, skin and loose muscle tissue is taken out from the upper and/or lower eyelids. It is generally an outpatient procedure. Local anesthesia is administered with intravenous sedation, also known as ‘twilight sedation’. An Incision is made using a radio frequency unit and to keep bleeding to a minimum throughout the surgery as well as to remove unwanted fat.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

For your lower eyelid lift, an incision is usually made in the crow’s feet, the crease 1 2 mm just below the eyelashes. As this area already has lines, the scars are not very obvious. Traditional methods known as the skin-muscle flap and the transconjunctival method are the most commonly used for performing lower blepharoplasty. In this method, an incision is made adjoining to lower lashes, concealing it to the maximum.

The surgeon lifts the skin to remove a small quantity of fat before removing excess fat and muscle from the lower lid.

Transconjunctival blepharoplasty is usually performed when patients have a pouch of fat under their lower eyelids but no loose skin. The incision is concealed inside the lower eyelid so it leaves no obvious scars. It is commonly carried out on patients who are younger and have flabby lower eyelids and elastic skin.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

An upper eyelid lift requires making an elliptical cut in the crease of the upper eyelid within the natural fold of the skin, to remove excess skin and fat.

The surgeon then draws a line to select the lower edge of skin that will be removed, which will finally turn into scars after surgery. The next step in your eyelid surgery is to mark the surplus skin i the upper eyelid.

Subsequent to that, extra skin and fatty tissues are removed together with a thin layer of muscle to enhance the contour of your eyelid crease. A single layer of sutures is used to close the incision, generally concealing the scar in the upper eyelid fold. A single long stitch, known as a running stitch is commonly used during the upper eyelid lift.

Operating Time for cosmetic eye surgery– 1 to 3 hours.

Recovery after your eyelid lift:

  • Incisions will be covered with thin bandages that are sterile, post your eye surgery
  • A cream may be put on to avoid dryness
  • The treated area may swell up and bruise for a few weeks, based on the degree of surgery
  • We recommend using extra pillows while lying down, to elevate your head above the heart level as this helps in the healing process
  • Application of ice packs or cold compresses for the initial 48 hours usually help to reduce the swelling

Once the anesthesia starts to wear off you may experience tightness or soreness in your eyelids.

Some patients may also feel a mild stinging sensation.  Three to five days after surgery your surgeon will remove the fine sutures used to close the incision.

Post Eyelid Surgery Care

Although normal activities may be resumed post your eyelid lift like using a computer, watching television or reading, they should be minimal, as your eyes may feel tired easily. You may notice that your eyes are itchy and for a few days and your surgeon may also advise using eye drops. If you wear contact lenses, they should be avoided for one or two weeks as they may briefly cause discomfort when you start to wear them again. Care should be taken by wearing sunglasses, as your eyes will be sensitive to the sun, wind and other irritants for a few weeks. If possible excessive blinking should be avoided as it may increase swelling further. Alcohol should also be avoided, as it tends to dry out the eyes resulting in fluid retention and can also prolong recovery. Scars may appear pink up to six months post your cosmetic eye surgery but they should fade away eventually and hardly be evident. Eyelid scars heal quite well due to the skin around the eyes being thin and rarely forming keloids. For the first two weeks, any activity that increases the blood flow to the eyes should be avoided, like crying, lifting, bending or exercise.

5 to 10 days post eyelid lift.

Cosmetic eye lift surgery can be performed on people over 30 years;  often eye bags run in families and depending on your genetics can start showing at a young age.

Cosmetic eye surgery may incur minor complications like temporary blurred vision for a couple of days, burning, stinging, gritty sensation in the eye, excessive tearing and a slight asymmetry.

Sometimes after the sutures are removed tiny white heads or milia may appear.

However are easily treated by the surgeon.

Serious complications involve reduced sensation in the eyelids, dry eyes; difficulty in closing eyes completely, obvious or hardened scars or pulling down of the lower lid.

Bleeding behind the eye called a retrobulbar hematoma is a more severe but rare complication.
